23.09.25 Stone of the repulik

On Friday, 19 September 2025, the annual meeting of former border guards from Neubistritz - Nová Bystřice and Altstadt - Staré Město pod Landštejnem took place at the Stone of the Republic in front of the Waldhotel Peršlák.
At around 3 p.m., numerous former soldiers, their family members and now also their children gathered to commemorate the difficult events of 1938.
The main organiser, Mr Novotný, asked me to say a few words at the beginning. Since the 1990s, I had repeatedly heard stories from former soldiers who visited our hotel that several of their comrades had lost their lives in the former barracks in Peršlák. These stories preoccupied me for many years, but alongside my work at the hotel, I never had the time to compile all the data accurately. Many eyewitnesses could not remember the full names, exact dates or circumstances of the deaths.
A few years ago, I met historian Radka Krejčová. Through her tireless work, she managed to piece together a clear and complete picture from incomplete names and uncertain dates. It is thanks to her efforts that we now know the names and dates of death of all seven soldiers who lost their lives in the former barracks in Peršlák. I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to Ms Krejčová for her valuable work.
In my speech, I also emphasised that this gathering at the Stone of the Republic is not a political event, but primarily a commemoration of the difficult year 1938 and the sacrifices that customs officers and soldiers had to make at that time.
For me personally, it is equally important to commemorate the seven young men who lost their lives in the barracks in Peršlák between 1945 and 1989. The most common cause of death was suicide. These young men had to serve here – they were not here voluntarily. And as a parent, one cannot and does not want to imagine what it means when one's own son never returns home.
In the near future, we intend to install a neutral memorial plaque bearing the names of these seven young men at the Peršlák Forest Hotel. We have gratefully declined the offer made by the Klub českého pohraničí (Czech Borderlands Club) to contribute financially or with a design for the plaque. For me, it is crucial that this memorial remains independent.
The memorial plaque will not be placed directly on the Stone of the Republic, as it has no historical connection to this monument. Instead, we will create a dignified place in the hotel's park, which is open to the public, where these young men can be commemorated.
For the future, I hope that the annual meetings of former border guards will take place in memory of these seven comrades. I would also like to invite former customs officers and gendarmes who served on the Austrian border in the coming years. I am convinced that the time has come to make this meeting an opportunity for cross-border gathering and mutual understanding.

11.09.25 The history of Peršlák

Two weeks ago, we welcomed a group of senior citizens from the Waldviertel region, and last week we welcomed a group of senior citizens from the Tabor district. Together, we took walks to the northernmost point of Austria, to the bridge in the Valley of Love, to the Stone of the Republic, to the destroyed village of Neumühl and to the Iron Curtain Memorial.
Such a walk with detailed explanations of the history of our surroundings takes about one to one and a half hours. For clubs or interested senior citizens' groups, it is of course free of charge if you have lunch with us in our restaurant afterwards.
We are particularly pleased to introduce you to our beautiful border region between Austria and Czechia with its eventful history, especially outside the high season.
These tours are only available on weekdays, from Monday to Thursday, by prior appointment. On weekends (Friday to Sunday), the hotel and restaurant are very busy, so unfortunately we cannot accept larger group reservations. The tours are offered in German, Czech or English.
The minimum number of participants is 15.
For reservations, please contact us at +420 384 386 505 or hotel@perslak.com.

11.05.25 How was the weekend?

Dear guests, thank you very much for your numerous visits on this long weekend (8 May is a bank holiday in the Czech Republic). Many cyclists are already flocking to our border region - the cycling season is in full swing despite the cooler temperatures. The number of hikers on the ‘Via Czechia’ long-distance hiking trail is also increasing.

A special moment for us was the visit of a large company who celebrated the christening of their baby with us - we were delighted to be part of this special day.
Sunday was exceptionally well attended - even though Mother's Day is traditionally celebrated more in Austria than in the Czech Republic. We had prepared 50 roses for our mums - a small gesture that brought great joy.

We also covered our guest garden with white tablecloths - Gudrun provided the atmospheric floral decorations. It was like a spring fairy tale.
Our team in the kitchen, led by our chef Jiří, once again did a great job, and Lukáš, František and Tereza took good care of our guests.

A big thank you to our guests, our staff and our helpers for a successful weekend full of wonderful encounters.
